Division 4.1 Flammable Solids Testing

Flammable Solids (Division 4.1) testing was performed on the composite sample in general accordance with the relevant procedures as defined within the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria (UN Manual (OECD, 2009)). Part III – Section 33.2 of the UN Manual (OECD, 2009) defines the procedures for Divison 4.1 Flammable Solids testing.

The procedure prescribes a preliminary screening test be conducted to determine if, on ignition by a gas flame, propagation by burning with flame or smouldering occurs. If propagation occurs within a specified time then the full test is to be carried out to determine the rate and vigour of burning.

If in the screening test the substance did not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering, it is not necessary to perform the complete burning rate test as the substance is not a readily combustible solid of Division 4.1. If propagation occurs and burning time was less than a specified time, the full burning rate test is to be performed.

2.1   Test Modifications

The procedure as defined within Part III – Section 33.2 of the United Nations Manuals of Tests and Criteria (OECD, 2009) prescribes that the sample be moulded into a 250mm long x 20mm wide x 10mm heigh triangular train. The material was cut to approximatly 250mm long x 50mm wide, a rectangular shape simulating the size of material tested as powder or cake.

2.2   Testing Criteria

In regards to a sample undergoing a preliminary screening test, Part III – Section 33.2 of the UN Manual (OECD,2009) states that for metals or metal – alloys a hot frame should be applied to one end of the sample train until it ignites or for a maximum of 5 minutes  (if the sample does not ignite). If the substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smoulder along 200mm of the sample train then the substance should not be classified as a flammable solid and no further testing is required.

2.3   Results

The composite sample was not considered a Division 4.1 flammable solid as the flame and any combustion was not propagated after removal of an intense flame, in contact initially for 1 minute. Refer to the Photographs below.
